Definition Of Letter By Letter:

Alphabetizing method in which a reference work's entries are arranged in the sequence of the letters and not words and where multi-word entries are treated as single words.
For example, 'linear function' is followed by 'linearity' and not 'linear market.' In the word by word method 'linear function' is followed by 'linear market.' Most reference books follow this method.
